Webnews is a grass roots media platform, where news and videos can be discovered, selected and discussed. Contrarily to traditional offers, articles are not written by editors but collected in magazines, news portals and blogs and published by the users themselves. Other users are asked to vote, resulting in a daily ranking of the most popular articles. On average, 50% of top ten articles deal with politics. Thus users, who are not really interested in politics, come across articles that deal with current political topics. As these articles in the first place are usually published by major regional newspapers, Webnews is generating young readers for traditional news publishers.
In August 2009, Webnews was sold to ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG.
